Our hearts are important to God. We can see this when God sends Samuel to anoint the next king of Israel. He says, “People look at the outward appearance, but God looks at the heart.” In Matthew, Jesus also says, “These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.” Our heart is the issue, and that is the problem that Jesus came to solve. Jesus wants to fix our hearts. Our hearts often have the wrong motives, and they urge us to do the wrong things. We rebel against God; we do our own thing. We sin because we chase the desires of our sinful heart instead of chasing God. David was described as a man after God’s own heart, and that is what made him the great king that we read about. He made mistakes too, he wasn’t perfect, but his heart was in the right place. His motive was to please and serve God.
